OK definitely not your mindless, "Yeah let's kick ass and
take revenge" Stallone style 'feel good' movie.   Based
upon the horrific 1972 Massacre of the Israeli Olympic
team by Palestinian Terrorists in Munich and Israel's
response.   Eric Bana (who I always think of in terms of his
portrayal of a Delta Operator in "
Blackhawk Down") does a
great job of playing the Mossad agent who is in charge of
the assassinations of the terrorists who were allegedly
responsible for the Munich Operation.   He starts out as a
good soldier simply looking to follow his orders and
gradually ends disillusioned, tortured and distrustful of
everyone because of the great burden of the mission.   I
expected an understandably one sided view from a movie
directed by Steven Spielberg but I thought it did a decent
job showing both sides of the conflict and why the both
think of their actions as justified. Oh yeah..nice lil hottie
who plays a Dutch female assassin. =)

X-Men: The Last

2005
Director: Brett Ratner
Starring: Hugh Jackman, Halle
Berry, Ian McKellan, Patrick
Stewart, Famke Janssen
I watched: In theater 6/3/06
This is one I would have waited for on HBO if I did not
have a nine year old daughter who wanted to see it at
the theater. Mutants are somewhat accepted in
society now, even with a mutant on the President's
Cabinet (Kelsey Grammar/Dr. Frasier Crane as "Beast"-
a new X-Man) until things get riled up when a
"permanent cure" is discovered for mutation.
Magneto gets the mutants fired up and starts a war on
humanity and is joined by the resurrected Jean Gray
and her alter ego "Phoenix"- who is more powerful
than either Magneto or the good guys leader, Dr.
Xavier.  Phoenix smokes a couple of the good guys
(surpising ones too) and there are some cool new
mutants- including Vinnie Jones (
Snatch's Bullet
Tooth Tony).  Also the "cure" de-mutates (is that a
word?) a couple of mutants as well- but we all know
they can always find a good reason to bring the
characters back.  Not a bad flick, pretty much what
you expect from an X-Men "tri-quel".

I thought Johnny Cash was the man before I saw this
but now after seeing it- what can I say?  He just kicks
ass!!  HIghlights the life of Johnny Cash as he breaks
into the music scene alongside some real heavy
weights (Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, and
Waylon Jennings) and shows how his dark side both
fueled his creative energy and nearly destroyed him.
The main theme shows how his love affair with June
Carter saved him after he really f'd things up with his
drug addiction and self destructive life.  Goes as far
as 1968 with his live show in Folsom Prison as a peak
and turning point.  Joaquin Phoenix & Reese
Witherspoon do a great job as the leads and sound
great as well (they do all their own vocals).  Plus DVD
has a Commentary from Director.
Walk the Line
Whenever I see a movie made from a book I really
enjoy the movie rarely meets up to the level of the
book.  The Da Vinci Code is no exception.  Even tho
it's been a couple years since I read the book, I
remembered enough to notice the major plot
differences between the book and the movie.   It was a
very "OK" movie- nothing amazing but not terrible
either.  Just did not capture the intrigue and suspense
of the book.  Paul Bettany did a good job playing the
crazy Opus Dei monk Silas.  Beyond that- just read the
book and maybe wait for the DVD.

OK watched this after being sick as a friggin' dog...so I
may not be totally objective, but thought this was a
very good movie.  Reminded me so much of my time
in the Service: just waiting around, things sucking so
bad but trying to pretend you love it, Joe doing
unbelievably stupid shit to pass the time.  It's not an
over the top "message movie" a la Sting/save the rain
forest stuff.  Just shows one Marine's perspective of
what the first war in Iraq was like as an enlisted
Marine.  Jamie Foxx is particularly good as the career
NCO serving as Gyllenhaal's Platoon Sergeant.
Definitely worth watching.
Superman Returns
2006
Director: Bryan Singer
Starring: Brandon Routh,
Kate Bosworth, Kevin Spacey
I watched: Theater 7/3/06
Thought this was a good movie- mainly with a bunch of
lesser known actors.  Basic story is that Superman
returns to Metropolis after a 5 year absence.  He returns
from a visit to his destroyed home planet to find Lois
Lane living with a man who she apparently has a son
with, and that she is won a Pulitzer for an article titled
"Why the World does not need Superman", and Lex
Luther released from prison.  Kevin Spacey plays a kick
ass Lex Luther and the special effects are good.
Another nice touch is film from original Marlon Brando
incorporated into the movie.

OK watched this because Morgan wanted to see it.  It's
sort of a rip off a "Fantistic Four"/X-Men-esque super
hero theme where Tim Allen plays a retired superhero
brought in to train a bunch of new young super heros.
Morgan summed it up when she said after the movie,
"Daddy that movie wasn't very good."  If you can't
please a 9 year old...come on!  Only redeeming thing
was that I thought one of the actresses,
Kate Mara, was
hot.  Not even worth renting on DVD.
Talladega Nights: The
Ballad of Ricky Bobby
2006
Director: Adam McKay
Starring: Will Farrell, John C.
Reilly, Gary Cole
I watched: Theater 9/2/06
Lot of hype for this flick because I have loved Will
Farrell in Old School, Elf & Anchorman and while
did not exceed the hype, it definitely made me
laugh my ass off.   The plot follows driver Ricky
Bobby on his rise in the NASCAR circuit.  I totally
do not get NASCAR at all but I can see where this
movie can be enjoyed by both hard-core racing
fans and guys like me.  They totally poke fun at the
redneck roots of it and
Sacha Baron Cohen (aka Ali
G) is great as a gay, French Formula One race car
driver who acts as Ricky's antagonist.  I have a
feeling I will like this one better after I watch it on
DVD a few times.  Not exactly "Citizen Kane" but
you will laugh!

Saw this with Morgan and one of her girlfriends as
part of Morgan's tenth birthday.  Boog is a
domesticated bear who is pretty happy living in his
owners garage until a crazy deer named Elliot takes
him out on the town one night and gets him exiled to
the "The Woods" just in time for hunting season.
Boog adjusts to the woods and mahem ensues.
Overall pretty cute movie and Kutcher's dumbass
deer is funny.

This was a weird but good flick.  Pierce Brosnan
plays Julian, a burnt out, fucked up hit man who
develops an unlikely friendship with Danny, an
'everyman-type' in Mexico City.  Julian gives
Danny a glimpse of the thrill of being a contract
killer.

Really liked this flick.  Julian is a screwed up guy
you just cannot quite trust but somehow you just
like him anyways.  He has some great quotes like:
"I look like a Bangkok hooker on a Sunday
morning, after the navy's left town."
The Jacket walks down the well-worn path of
psychological thrillers which rely on the blurry line
between dream-state and reality.  Comparisons to
Jacob's Ladder are inevitable given that the main
character, Jack Starks (Adrian Brody), is a war veteran
struggling to fill the gaps in his damaged memory.
After being found at the scene of a murder, his
inability to offer an alibi or alternative leaves him
convicted and sentenced to a hospital for the
criminally insane.  While hospitalized he falls under
the treatment of Dr. Becker (played by the
ever-grizzly Kris Kristofferson) who wraps his patients
in a strait jacket and locks them away for hours in a
morgue drawer.

The Departed
A History of Violence
This movie was much better than I originally thought
it would be.  It stars Viggo Mortenson (SLU grad!) as
Tom Stall: a quiet, peaceful, small town diner owner
who gains fame when he kills two serial killers who
take over his diner with intent of killing everyone.
Maria Bello plays his wife Edie.  After Stall’s actions
land him on the news as a hero, a Phillie Mob boss
Carl Fogarty, played by Ed Harris, shows up claiming
Stall is actually “Joey Cusack”, a mob killer who
Fogarty has a score to settle with.
The film is essentially the remake of the story told in
Les Miserables. (OK to be fair I jus busted on
someone pretty badly at lunch the other day saying
‘Did you just go “Les Mis” on us?!   But look here I
am!)

Heard about this movie sometime ago- just that it was
a Martin Scorsese film about the Irish Mob in Boston
that had great cast including Matt Damon, Leonardo
DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, Martin Sheen, Alec
Baldwin and Mark Wahlberg.  Well the film was not
the next coming of the Godfather but it did not
disappoint.
Jack Nicholson plays Irish Mob Boss Frank Costello.
Costello takes in Colin Sullivan (Damon) at a young
age and makes sure he is taken care of, educated
well with ultimate goal of getting him inside the
Massachusetts Police Academy so he can become a
Mob mole inside the Department.

This is a feel good movie similar to "Miracle"- just
not quite as good.  Follows the real life story of Vince
Papale, a 30 year old Philadelphia bartender who
makes it to the NFL as a walk on in the mid 70s.  Kind
of cool knowing this is a true story.  I liked Greg
Kinnear as Dick Vermeil.  Especially interesting
seeing Vermeil portrayed as a young coach breaking
into the NFL vs the Coaching legend he is now.
Worth a watch but nothing to do cartwheels over.

Paul Giamatti plays an apartment building
superintendent whyo discovers a mermaid-like
woman  named Story (Howard) living in the
apartment pool.  Story has come with a message to
mankind that will ultimately save the world.  However
evil forces are trying to prevent her from fulfilling her
mission.  I think Shyamalan misses the mark a bit with
this movie.  The oddball tenants of the apartment
complex believe in the magical stuff going on a little
too readily.  Ron Howard's daughter is a hottie tho
and does a good job.  Wait til it hits TV.

Fantastic 4: Silvr Surfer
This sequel finds the Fantastic 4 living as celebrities
and Reed & Sue trying to plan their celebrity
wedding.  This is interrupted by the appearance of
The Silver Surfer, a mysterious alien who is the
harbinger of a planet's destruction 8 days later.    So
the team sets up an alliance with the military and
their old nemesis Victor Von Doom to try to stop this.
Jessica Alba is, as always, super hot- even when on
fire, and I enjoy the cameos by Stan Lee, but this
movie just didn't do much for me.  Mildly
entertaining is how I would summarize it.  Never
really explains how Von Doom reappears and a
couple of annoying cliche subplots  muddy the
waters as well.  See it on HBO some rainy Sunday.

I am Legend
IN this remake of The Omega Man Will Smith plays
Dr. Robert Neville, the sole survivor of a man-made
virus that either killed everyone human on the planet
or turned them into feral, violent zombie like
creatures that can venture out only at night.  I like
the twist that the virus the result of what was initially
thought to be a cure for cancer.  The film starts out
showing Neville going thru a fairly quiet, 'typical'
day- slowly building the suspense as you watch,
knowing something bad is coming.  Smith does a
great job showing a man trying to deal with the
loneliness of being the sole survivor...great action
sequences.  Only downside is rather unbelievable
appearance of Anna.  Highly recommend seeing it!

Oh my God this movie is just  so funny in an
absolutely retarded and immature way, but hilarious
nonetheless.  It's a tried and true format of any teen
movie- 3 lovable losers trying to get in with the cool
kids and desperately trying to laid before they
graduate and go there different ways.  In order to get
in with the cool crowd, they commit to getting a fake
ID and buying the booze for the party.  The dorkiest
of the 3 gets a fake ID saying he is a 25 yr old guy
who goes by one name: McLovin.  Anyways- too
much to summarize.  The two hard drinking
hair-brained cops are great   I was freaking dying
watching this movie.  Go out and buy the DVD.

Hancock features Smith as Hancock, a drunken,
unfriendly and unpopular super hero in Los Angeles.  He
uses his powers to ‘help” but in his case the cure is worst
than the disease causing  $M of unnecessary damages
in the meantime.  Bateman plays an an  idealistic PR
man who wants to remake Hancock’s image  Theron
plays his wife, who has an issue with Hancock and a
secret of her own.
While this had some decent parts and some laughs to
it- mostly I think the movie misses the mark.  Honestly the
main thing I came away thinking was “Wow Charlize
Theron is really hot” probably not exactly what they were
going for.  The movie starts out ok but seems to lose it’s
way with the parallel plot between Smith and Theron.
Didn’t hate it but didn’t love it- expected more.

This follows then final months of the infamous outlaw
Jesse James’ (Pitt) life before being shot and killed by
Robert Ford (Affleck).  This was a very good movie.  It
follows a documentary style, with breaks of narration and
background to develop the story and make you
understand just how much of a celebrity James was. Pitt
does a great job playing James-, which honestly
surprised me.  He comes off as likeable, charismatic yet
Pitt does an effective job of conveying menace and
danger without overselling it.  Affleck proves to the
Affleck brother with acting ability and shows them off.
You can see the conflicted emotions of envy, love and
hate he feels towards his idol, James.  Slow but
definitely a good movie.
